Speaker Biography: Terry Sunderland

Terry Sunderland is a Senior Scientist with CIFOR’s Forests and Livelihoods Programme, and leads the research domain ‘Managing trade-offs between conservation and development at landscape scale’. Prior to joining CIFOR Terry was based in Central Africa for many years and worked there for the UK’s Department for International Development, University College London, and more recently the Wildlife Conservation Society. He has extensive consultancy experience with various international organizations, including the United States Forest Service, GTZ and the Smithsonian Institution. Terry holds a PhD from University College London.

Speaker Biography: Tom Clements

Tom Clements has worked in international conservation for over 10 years. From 2002-2008 he was based in Cambodia for the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) as the lead advisor on large landscape-scale conservation projects, including development of market-linked mechanisms for conservation such as PES. Since 2008 he has worked regionally for WCS in South-east Asia on PES and the development of REDD, including work for the USAID TransLinks programme. He is currently the advisor to the Cambodian Government’s National REDD+ Readiness planning process.

Resources: Can Marine Markets & Ocean Zoning Help Save the Seas?

The Katoomba Group’s Ecosystem Marketplace, the preminent on-line source of news, data, and analytics on markets and payments for ecosystem services is publishing a series of articles related to the Katoomba conference in Hanoi next week.

The latest article, titled “Can Marine Markets & Ocean Zoning Help Save the Seas?” is summarised below and available here.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill reminds us once again that the economy depends on ecology and one man’s cheap solution is often another’s cost.  This was a central theme of the Marine Ecosystem Services meeting in Palo Alto, and will be again at next week’s Katoomba Meeting in Hanoi.  Here we examine two powerful tools to help preserve the oceans by recognizing their true value.

Speaker Biography: Jin Leshan

After his BSc. (in agronomy) and MSc. (in agricultural history) studies at Beijing Agricultural University, Mr. Jin Leshan got his PhD. Degree in environmental economics  at College of Economics and Management, China Agricultural University (CAU) in 1997. He did his post-doctoral studies at Economics Department, Bar Ilan University, Israel, in 2000-2001, doing research on water management and wastewater irrigation. Since 1990 he has been teaching a series of courses, including “environmental economics” for under-graduate students, “environmental management” for graduate students,  and “environmental policy instruments” for international students. He has broad research interests in the fields of natural resources management, environmental economics, and water use in agriculture and has published paper in international journals (e.g. Water Policy published by Elsevier). He is professor with College of Humanities and Development, China Agricultural University, and also works as researcher and consultant for many development projects.
