Speaker Biography: Winnie Lau, Program Manager, Marine Ecosystem Services Program

Winnie Lau is the Program Manager for the Marine Ecosystem Services (MARES) Program. Prior to joining the MARES Program, she worked at the U.S. Department of State as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Diplomacy Fellow and an AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy Fellow. Winnie worked in three different offices at the Department of State: Office of the Science and Technology Adviser to the Secretary, Office of Oceans Affairs, and Office of Multilateral Trade Affairs—covering issues such as U.S.-Japan bilateral science and technology cooperation, international policies on marine biodiversity, marine protected areas, coral reefs and climate change, and accessions to the World Trade Organization. Winnie received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Oceanography and graduate certificates in Environmental Management and Technical Japanese from the University of Washington and her B.A. in Environmental Sciences and Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Winnie has extensive field research experience in coastal and marine environments, from the mangroves of Okinawa, Japan to the high seas in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. She speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese, and basic Spanish.
