Speaker Biography: Vu Tan Phuong, Director of The Research Centre for Forest Ecology and Environment, Vietnam

Vu Tan Phuong has been working at Research Centre for Forest Ecology and Environment (RCFEE) since 1994. Much of his work, both academic and professional, has been devoted to sustainable forest and environment management. His assignments in Vietnam have also given him very good knowledge of forest ecology, forest valuation, carbon accounting, and climate change related to forestry and payment for environment services.

Mr. Phuong is a member of National Working Group on Climate Change of MONRE. He contributes to the development of second national communication report regarding the climate change impacts assessment and green house gases inventory in forestry sector. He also carried a number of studies on forest valuation that provide important scientific base for development of policies on forest valuation and payment for forest environmental services in Vietnam. In addition to that he also a key person for preparing the CDM Cao Phong Reforestation Project with the support of JICA and is being a source of support for forestry carbon related projects development in Vietnam.

Mr. Phuong is now leading an EU project in Vietnam on Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation through Alternative Landuses in Rainforests of Tropics (REDD- ALERT); JICA’s study on analysis of emission from conversion of natural forests to rubber plantation; CIFOR’s study on country profile for REDD. He also manages the ministry level research on valuation of mangrove forests and Development of method for Green House Gases inventory in forestry sector.
